Microsoft’s flashy 2-in-1 Surface Book starts at $1,500 but fans will need to fork out $3,199 for the full 1TB storage option, which is now available on pre-order.

Microsoft has just revealed the price for its highest specced Surface Book on the Microsoft Store, ending speculation over exactly what the terabyte version would cost.

The new device isn’t priced for the faint-hearted, with the entry point of $1,500 causing some to baulk at a purchase, despite its sleek design and sturdy construction.

Until Friday, Microsoft had only revealed that the Surface Book featuring an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD for storage, would cost $2,699.

The 13.5-inch Surface Book and Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro aren’t directly comparable devices, though Microsoft is using its 2-in-1 to attack the higher end of the MacBook Pro.

On the price front, the 1TB Surface Book is $500 more than a MacBook Pro kitted out with an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and Intel Iris Graphics 6100 GPU.

The 1TB version of the Surface Book also includes an i7 processor, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GPU, and of course is running Windows 10 Pro.

The same price difference exists between 512GB versions of the Surface Book and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

According to Microsoft, the 2-in-1 will ship by January 22 next year, while all other versions are shipping within the next eight weeks.

Unfortunately fans won’t be able to take the edge off the Surface Book’s price with Microsoft’s just launched trade-up program, which specifically excludes the Surface Book and Surface Pro lines of hardware.
